CAASNM partners in this effort with American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), Doña Ana Community College, and Women’s Intercultural Center in Anthony, NM.

Prior to the 2008 tax season (for Tax Year 2007), Community Action Agency was a VITA site and AARP TaxAide had a separate Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program in Las Cruces. In 2007, CAA contacted the AARP TaxAide state coordinator and suggested consolidating both programs. AARP TaxAide would gain access to CAA facilities and computer hardware and CAA would be able to use AARP’s Electronic Filer Identification Number (EFIN) and volunteers but it would now follow the TCE guidelines. Since AARP had two EFIN’s for Las Cruces, in the 2008 and 2009 tax season, AARP also prepared taxes at City of Las Cruces Senior Center. In 2010, due to facility problems, AARP had no access to the City Senior Center. Rather than forfeit the second EFIN, it was decided to open a second site in Anthony.

During Tax Season 2013 (Tax Year 2012), 41 volunteers donated a total of 1963 hours and  helped CASSNM serve 5,367 clients and file 8,127 federal and state tax returns with refunds totaling more than $4.3 million. Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) refunds totaled $1.3 million, Educational Credits were $151,638 and Child Tax Credits were $151, 429.

CAASNM served more clients and completed more returns than 10 combined tax sites in Albuquerque and saved low-income taxpayers over $600,000 in tax preparation fees. Twenty-three (23.2%) percent of clients served by the tax program were 60 years or older. CAASNM uses the tax preparation season for educating low-income people on the benefits of the Earned Income Tax Credit and linking tax refunds to asset-building activities like IDAs. Due to its in-house tax preparation expertise, CAASNM can connect hard-working parents with services like free financial literacy and total benefits screening.
